Formally classified in 1936 under the INAO, Burgundy's celebrated hierarchy of Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards traces its roots to meticulous terroir mapping by Cistercian monks centuries earlier. The Côte d'Or alone counts 33 Grand Cru climats across barely 550 hectares — just 2% of the region's vineyards — making it one of the most prestigious and fragmented wine regions in the world.
