Burgundy's Grand Cru vineyards were singled out when the region's celebrated hierarchy was formally classified in 1936 under the INAO, building on terroir boundaries first mapped by Cistercian monks centuries earlier. Just 33 Grand Cru climats lie within the Côte d'Or, covering barely 550 hectares — a sliver of Burgundy's total vineyard — yet they produce some of the most sought-after wines in the world.
