Sauternes

Granted AOC status in 1936, Sauternes is Bordeaux's benchmark sweet-wine appellation, its roughly 1,200 hectares of alluvial and sandy-gravel soils spread across five communes — Sauternes, Barsac, Bommes, Fargues and Preignac — between the Garonne river and the Landes forest. The 1855 Classification ranked 27 Sauternes estates, with Château d'Yquem alone crowned Premier Cru Supérieur, while houses such as Château Guiraud and Château Suduiraut carry Premier Cru Classé status, their wines shaped by the noble rot drawn from the morning mists off the Ciron river.
