Tasting Notes & Ratings
Grape
100% Sauvignon Blanc, from the estate’s caillottes parcels
Tasting notes
A frank and lively attack opens into a floral, fruity nose of citrus, grapefruit and crisp green apple, joined by wildflowers. The palate shows classic caillottes minerality — crushed rock and refined herbal notes — carried by bright acidity through a clean, precise finish.
More About The Winery
The Thomas family has grown grapes and made wine on the slopes of Sancerre since 1670. Today the estate is run by Julien Thomas, who represents the 13th generation of the family to work this land — after training at the Lycée Viticole in Beaune and a formative stint at Burgundy’s Domaine Tollot-Beaut, he returned home in the mid-2000s and brought a terroir-first, Burgundian sensibility to the family’s Sancerre vineyards.
Based in the village of Verdigny, in the northwestern part of the Sancerre appellation, Domaine Thomas & Fils farms roughly 16 hectares across the three soil types that define Sancerre’s patchwork of terroirs: the clay-flint of silex, the shallow stony limestone of caillottes, and the marl-rich clay-limestone of terres blanches. Since taking over, Julien has eliminated herbicides, returned to working the soil by hand and plough, and moved the estate into organic and biodynamic viticulture — biodynamic methods began on select parcels in 2010 and expanded across the whole domaine by 2012.
‘Le Pierrier’ — French for “the stone quarry” — draws on the estate’s caillottes parcels, the shallow, rocky limestone soils that give Sancerre Sauvignon Blanc its signature chalky minerality. Fermented with native yeasts and aged on the lees, it is a pure, unoaked expression from vines averaging around 25 years old, built to show precision and stony terroir character.
