Tasting Notes & Ratings

Grape

A field blend of Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Muscat and Sylvaner, among other traditional Alsace varieties, co-planted and harvested together.

Tasting notes

Berckem is pressed as whole clusters and fermented with ambient yeasts before ageing around 12 months on its lees, a process that builds real texture and complexity. Grown on Keuper marl over Jurassic limestone around Bergheim, the wine layers orchard and stone fruit with aromatic spice and floral lift, all carried on a mineral, saline backbone that reflects the vineyard's soil. It's a wine built for complexity and food-pairing versatility rather than simple varietal fruit.

More About The Winery

Domaine Marcel Deiss, based in Bergheim, Alsace, is led by Jean-Michel Deiss, a pioneer of the region's return to field-blend, single-vineyard winemaking centred on terroir rather than single-varietal labelling. The estate farms biodynamically, certified by both Ecocert (organic) and Demeter (biodynamic), and is regarded as one of the most influential and philosophically distinctive producers in Alsace. Wines like Berckem reflect Deiss's belief that a specific site, planted with the traditional mix of varieties historically grown there, expresses terroir more honestly than a single grape variety can.
