Tasting notes
An expressive nose of dark berries and black olives, lifted by mint and leafy herbs, with graphite, cocoa and smoky oak adding depth. The palate is full-bodied and concentrated, its generous dark fruit framed by firm, tightly woven tannins. Cedar, coffee and baking spice unfold towards a long, savoury finish, with a lingering touch of pepper.
More About The Winery
Domaine Fangsi was established in 2022 by a group of young sommeliers and winemakers, with the winemaking team led by Australia-trained Yao Ningning. Also appearing under the English name Domaine Freemind, the project brings a creative, ambitious approach to Chinese wine, seeking to demonstrate Ningxia’s potential through expressive wines and distinctive cuvées.
The estate lies in Ningxia’s Helan Mountain East wine region, with approximately 10 hectares of vineyards that predate the domaine’s establishment. First planted in 2013 by Yao Ningning’s father, the vineyards are planted principally to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Their stony, gravel-covered soils are poor in nutrients, encouraging the vines to root deeply in search of water and nourishment.
Baixia is the domaine’s single-vineyard Cabernet Franc, expressing a substantial, structured interpretation of the variety. The 2019 vintage is matured in oak, with concentrated fruit and a firm tannic framework that underpin its savoury complexity. Its name, translated as “the cult of Ningxia,” reflects the team’s ambition to establish the region’s place among the world’s fine-wine origins.
