Tasting Notes & Ratings
Grape
Predominantly Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon and a small amount of Cabernet Franc, reflecting the clay-limestone vineyard's largely Merlot-based planting.
Tasting notes
From the ripe, generous 2018 vintage, La Closerie de Fourtet shows a dark-fruited nose of blackcurrant and black cherry, laced with oak spice, graphite and a touch of dark chocolate. The palate is medium to full-bodied with supple, well-rounded tannins, its Merlot-led fruit giving immediate appeal while the small proportion of Cabernets adds structure and a mineral, slightly savoury edge to the finish. It is built to be approachable earlier than Clos Fourtet's grand vin, without sacrificing real Right Bank character.
More About The Winery
Clos Fourtet sits on the plateau just outside the walls of the old town of Saint-Émilion, on a site with origins as a medieval fort; the estate took its present name in 1868 and has been ranked Premier Grand Cru Classé B since the appellation's first classification. Owned by the Cuvelier family (also proprietors of Château Poujeaux) since 2001, the property works with consultant oenologist Stéphane Derenoncourt and manages its clay-limestone vineyard with organic and biodynamic-inspired methods, including grazing cattle and fallow plots to build soil health. La Closerie de Fourtet, the estate's second wine, is made from younger vines and declassified lots to preserve the concentration of the grand vin.
