Tasting notes

The 2017 Clos du Marquis, from a lighter-yielding vintage marked by spring frost, shows classic Saint-Julien perfume: blackberry, violet and a touch of Indian spice on the nose, with dark cherry, plum and cassis fruit underneath. The palate is medium to full-bodied, framed by firm but polished tannins, with cedar and light chocolate notes adding savoury complexity and a persistent, mineral-tinged finish. It offers real precision and cellar-worthy structure at a fraction of the price of a classified growth.

More About The Winery

Clos du Marquis takes its name from the Petit Clos adjacent to the historic residence of the Marquis de Las Cases, with the wine's first vintage dating to 1902; the property is owned by the Delon family, who also own Château Léoville Las Cases, Château Potensac and Château Nénin. Its vineyard lies in prime Saint-Julien terroir just west of the old Léoville estate, neighbouring Léoville Poyferré, Léoville Barton and Pichon Longueville. Although long assumed to be the second wine of Léoville Las Cases, Clos du Marquis has since the 1980s been vinified as its own site-specific wine from its own parcels, distinct from Léoville Las Cases' actual second wine, Le Petit Lion.
