Grape
100% Grüner Veltliner
Tasting notes
Grown on the hot, south-facing terraces of Ried Höll, this is the estate's most powerful Grüner Veltliner. Expect ripe yellow fruit – yellow apple, pineapple and mango – lifted by candied orange zest and a gentle peppery spice. The palate is full and juicy yet precise, with fresh acidity, a mineral core and a lemony, saline finish. A generous, structured Smaragd that shines at the table and will reward further bottle ageing.
More About The Winery
Domäne Roland Chan is a boutique estate in the heart of Austria's Wachau, founded in 2017 by Austrian banker Roland Müksch and his wife Dr. Sharon Chan after a decade-long search for vineyards in this tightly regulated region. Their first vintage, 2018, came from just half a hectare of old vines in Ried Höll and Ried Bach. Today the family tends just over two hectares of steep, hand-worked dry-stone terraces across four sites – Achleiten and Klaus in Weißenkirchen, Bach and Höll in Wösendorf – within the UNESCO World Heritage landscape of the Danube valley. The estate's logo shows five zodiac animals encircling the family name "Chan" in Chinese.
The wines are made by Christoph Donabaum, with Markus Skopek in charge of the vineyards. The estate has been certified sustainable since 2019 and joined Vinea Wachau, the region's quality growers' association, that same year. Wines rest on their fine lees, are bottled unfiltered and are released only after time in bottle. Ried Höll – "hell" in German, a nod to its heat – is where the domaine farms the entire south-facing side, and its Grüner Veltliner Smaragd won the trophy for Best Grüner Veltliner at the Hong Kong International Wine & Spirit Competition in 2023.
