Understanding Grower Champagne

The Champagne region is divided into three main sub-appellations, each producing a distinctly different style:

Côte des Blancs — south of Épernay, this is the heartland of blanc de blancs Champagne, made exclusively from Chardonnay. The wines are mineral, precise, and age-worthy. Vertus and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger are among its finest Premier Cru and Grand Cru villages.

Montagne de Reims — a horseshoe-shaped ridge of vineyards producing powerful, structured wines anchored in Pinot Noir. Grand Cru villages Ambonnay, Bouzy, and Verzenay define this style.

Vallée de la Marne — dominated by Pinot Meunier, producing suppler, more fruit-forward expressions.
