Tasting notes
The 2022 Pierre-Jean Villa Saint-Joseph 'Préface' is a Syrah-based wine that elegantly captures the essence of the Saint-Joseph appellation. Deep purple in hue, it opens with expressive aromas of red fruit, spice, and a subtle smoky undertone. On the palate, it is full-bodied yet refined, with a well-balanced tannic structure and a long, lingering finish marked by savory spice, black pepper, and a touch of vanilla. Hints of herbs and earth add further depth, making this a characterful and approachable introduction to the northern Rhône, with enough structure to age gracefully in the cellar.
More About The Winery
Pierre-Jean Villa founded his eponymous domaine in 2009 in the Northern Rhône, after years spent working vineyards and cellars across the region, including a period steering a wine collective in Vienne. The estate now farms some 14 to 17 hectares spread across both banks of the Rhône, encompassing the appellations of Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage and Seyssuel, on granite and schist soils suited to Syrah, Marsanne and Roussanne. Villa favours a non-interventionist approach, working with indigenous yeasts and timing racking and bottling to the lunar calendar, and the domaine has been certified organic since 2020. The resulting wines are prized for their purity, minerality and precise expression of terroir.
