Tasting notes

The 2021 is aromatic and precise, with cherry, blackberry and raspberry fruit layered with mint, bay leaf and a chalky, mineral lift characteristic of the estate's limestone terroir. On the palate it is medium to full-bodied with fine, velvety tannins, real tension and a long, spice-tinged finish that stays juicy and fresh rather than heavy. It is a cooler, more linear expression of the vintage that should reward a decade or more in the cellar.

More About The Winery

Chateau Pavie Macquin takes its name from Albert Macquin, the 19th-century viticulturist credited with pioneering the grafting of vines onto American rootstock during the phylloxera crisis. Today the property is owned by his descendants, the Corre family, with Nicolas Thienpont managing the estate and Stephane Derenoncourt overseeing winemaking since the early 1990s. Farmed across nine distinct clay-limestone soil types on Saint-Emilion's côte, the estate was promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classe B in the 2006 classification and has built a reputation for concentrated, mineral-driven wines of real ageing pedigree.
