What to expect? The vintage's key words are classicism and drinkability. Release prices are expected to be 25% lower than last year. It's a vintage that's going to sell fast, customers are going to be seduced by the attractive price combined with the fact that they'll be able to drink these wines in 5 years' time. So once again, position yourself quickly on the wines you want to buy.
The easy headline will be that it rained — a lot. Winter was wet and mild, and spring followed suit, bringing significant early mildew pressure. But this isn’t new for Bordeaux. Modern vignerons are skilled at managing it, and most handled the relentless spring rains well. Some organic estates, like Calon Ségur and Domaine de Chevalier, even reverted to traditional farming methods to combat the threat more effectively. Look closer, though, and 2024 wasn’t just about rain. There were key breaks: one at the end of May that allowed good flowering for well-prepared vineyards, and another during a mid-July to late-August drought, which brought crucial hydric stress to fast-draining soils.
Many solid wines will be released at steep discounts: we expect a 25% cut this year! While we’re not calling it the vintage of the century, it is shaping up to be the best value En Primeur release in over 15 years. Those who wait may well miss out—and regret it.
With the recent run of hot, sunny vintages, cooler, more moderate years like 2021 and 2024 have become increasingly compelling. Their restraint recalls classical vintages like 1985, 1988, 1996, and 2004, offering modest alcohol levels and a refreshing sense of balance. These are often the vintages that surprise us most. Importantly, 2024 was very successful for dry whites and Sauternes. Botrytis developed beautifully, producing rich, unctuous, and aromatic sweet wines. Highlights include Doisy-Daëne, Doisy-Védrines, Suduiraut, Coutet, and Climens. The dry whites — aromatic and bursting with nervy tension — impressed too, particularly Les Champs Libres, Grand Village Blanc, Domaine de Chevalier, Smith Haut Lafitte, and the Clarence Dillon range.
This could well be the best En Primeur opportunity since 2008!
Against all odds, this campaign is set to create quite a buzz: small volumes, significantly reduced prices, and good wines. No vintage report would be complete without addressing the market. Prices have been falling for the past few years. The world has changed: cheap money is gone, the cost of living is up, China’s economy is slowing, and the threat of tariffs looms. Uncertainty is everywhere. Some may ask, “who needs another en primeur campaign?” The reality is, this year it’s the châteaux who need it most. They need sales and cash flow to keep going. The days when négociants would bankroll campaigns are over. If wines don’t appeal to consumers, merchants won’t buy. If merchants don’t buy, négociants won’t buy — and the châteaux won’t get paid. This new reality should force a rethink on pricing. In 2024, en primeur must get back to basics: it should offer the best possible price to the consumer.
For collectors and enthusiasts, the vintage offers an opportunity to acquire high-quality Bordeaux wines at more accessible prices. Focus on estates that have demonstrated consistency and excellence in challenging vintages. Engaging with knowledgeable merchants can provide insights into the best values and allocations available.
