" Zusslin is one of the few domaines in Alsace that still produces the ambitious Sylvaners, with class and style!"
From the stellar vineyard site Bollenberg, the Zusslin’s newly arrived Sylvaner comes close to redefining the standard of Sylvaner with a De Niro Mean Streets-like intensity and savory essence that beguiles. Parts of the vines are now fifty years old - so some distinguished dirt is involved in this bottle.
Tasting notes: Dry, fresh, spicy, with a solid core of dark fruit, a sense of vinous enchantment pervades here.

The 2016 Sylvaner Bollenberg is from a parcel bought in 2013 that was immediately converted to biodynamic farming. After the excellent 2014 (which should be enjoyed now), the 2016 was yielded like a grand cru with just 35 hectoliters per hectare and aged in a large foudre for two years. The wine opens with a delicate nose of white fruits and some flinty notes. Delicate and pure on the palate, this is an elegant, refined and structured Sylvaner with a playful finish and clear, elegant fruit. Zusslin is one of the rare estates in Alsace that is still producing ambitious Sylvaners with class and style. The wine is still a bit phenolic, but this should oxidize with aeration. Truly remarkable wine for the ugly-duckling grape of Alsace! I love the bouquet of summer meadows and dried flowers. Lots of creamy textural complexity and some gentle tannins that provide a nice counterpoint. impressive length, in spite of the moderate acidity.
Established in 1691 by M. Jodocus CISLE (former name of Zusslin), Domaine Valentin ZUSSLIN is now run by two generations of the Zusslin family who are following in the footsteps of their forbears. The winery is based in Orschwihr, south of Colmar, and the vines are planted on the slopes of the Bollenberg, Clos Liebenberg and Grand Cru Pfingstberg.
Since 1997, the estate has been run in its entirety according to the principles of Bio-Dynamic culture. The vines are mainly worked by hand and a significant amount of time is devoted to caring for the soil.
Awarded the Robert Parker Green emblem in July 2021.
