Tasting notes: The grapes are aged in oak barrels and second or third-fill demi-muids for 24 months. Six months before bottling, they are then blended in barriques and demi-muids. The nose is both elegant and moreish and the palate is superb – both clean and flavoursome with a pleasing mineral finish.
Domaine de Montcalmès is located 30 km north-west of Montpellier. It takes its name from the hamlet of Montcalmès located on the plateau of the same name which overlooks the Hérault valley. Originally, the family farm had 30 ha of vines fully vinified in a cooperative cellar. In 1998, Frédéric Pourtalié and his father Jean-Marie decided to create a special cellar. The first wine making in red took place in 1999 and only 5000 bottles were produced.
Today, Domaine de Montcalmès produces around 50,000 bottles a year. The property extends over 22 ha in the municipalities of Puéchabon, Aniane, St Jean de Fos and St Saturnin de Lucian (municipalities all part of the Terrasses du Larzac appellation).
