"Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 Beychevelle has a fragrant, floral nose with warm cassis, preserved plums and Morello cherries plus earth, herbs and cinnamon touches. Medium-bodied, it has lovely expression with firm, fine grained tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and mineral laced. The wine was aged for 18 months in French oak, 60% new and 40% second fill. The final blend is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc. Fifty-two percent of the production was dedicated to the grand vin, with 240,000 bottles produced." Lisa Perrotti Brown, The Wine Advocate

First of all, Beychevelle is one of the most beautiful castles in the Médoc ! The most powerful families, such as the Dukes of Epernon and Jean-Louis Nogaret de la Valette, Grand Admiral of France and Governor of Guyenne, stayed there. Besides, the name of the place, Beychevelle for Baisse voile, would be linked to this man who demanded that ships, as a sign of homage, lower their sails as they passed in front of his castle. Today, the place is the property of the Grands Millésimes de France - Castel and Suntory Groups - and many prestigious events take place there.

If the estate covers 250 hectares, the vineyard occupies only 90 hectares with vines of about thirty years in 2012. They put the spotlight on Cabernet Sauvignon with about 62% of the surface area, then Merlot for a small third and finally, cabernet franc and petit verdot.

In the cellar, everything is done in the traditional way, with half of new wood, to express the sumptuous terroir of Saint-Julien and to produce wines worthy of this Fourth Grand Cru in the 1855 classification. Bernard Burtschy has chosen the first and Beychevelle's second wine.
