"The 2015 Fonbel has a delightful bouquet "

  • Wine Region:Bordeaux- France
  • Terroirs: Saint-Emilion
  • Grape: 80% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Carmenère and 5% Petit Verdot
  • Color:Red

Tasting notes: Predominantly Merlot, it is a benchmark Saint-Emilion; the nose rich with black fruits, blackberry jam, mocha and vanilla. The palate is fruity, relatively silky and offers minerality, tension and good volume with great precision. THe wine expresses intense notes blackberries, cassis jam, slight notes of questche plum and hints of small red fruits and sweet touches of spices and oak. Fine tannin. Incredible length and persistent finish.

92 / 100 Parker

The 2015 Fonbel has a delightful bouquet with raspberry and blackberry fruit and hints of pencil lead that I did not notice out of barrel. It's quite tight at the moment and will require bottle age to open. The palate is medium-bodied with a fleshy, caressing opening. There is a mixture of red and black fruit here with graphite and allspice, a finely proportioned Fonbel with quite a sustained finish. Very fine. Anticipated maturity: 2021 - 2032. Neal Martin

92 / 100 James Suckling

This has a pretty complexity of dark fruit such as black berry and cherry. Full body, mineral undertone. Firm tannins. James Suckling

The entry-level wine from the Vauthier Family (Château Ausone) and made from 80% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, the rest Carmenere and Petit Verdot, with 30% raised in barrel, the ruby-colored 2015 Château de Fonbel gives up medium to full-bodied notes of Asian spices, white pepper, and damp herbs to go with a pretty core of strawberry and cherry fruit. Charming, layered, and elegant, with impeccable balance, it’s already hard to resist yet is going to keep for a decade. 2018 - 2028

The history of Château de Fonbel refers to the Vauthier family. This wonderful vintage, nestled near the medieval town of Saint Emilion is one of three properties managed by Alain and Pauline Vauthier who work every day to produce exceptional wines.

The vineyard of Château de Fonbel is located in the plain of Saint-Emilion, installed on some 16 hectares. The soils are sandy-gravelly and 4 grape varieties coexist here: Merlot (60%), Cabernet Sauvignon (52%), Petit Verdot (10%) and Carmenère (5%). Alain Vauthier and his daughter Pauline (Châteaux Ausone and Moulin St.-Georges) have significantly raised the level of this property using the same methods as for Château Ausone. They put all their expertise in this property to achieve a very large Saint Emilion Grand Cru. The average age of the vines in the vineyard is 20 years and the harvest is done manually. The fermentation takes place in thermo-regulated stainless steel vats and the aging takes place in barrels of which 30% are new for 12 months.
