Great whites and concentrated, vibrant reds

2020 was another hot year in Burgundy, with significantly more sunshine than normal, but perhaps not the heat spikes of 2018. As happened in 2019, drought caused some blocking of ripening, meaning grapes concentrated by evaporation with their natural acidity concentrated too.

The whites are in the line of 2014 and 2017, perhaps more concentrated than either, fine and will be long-lived - it's a magnificent vintage and should be bought early with confidence, as recent short harvests have already meant that there is little wine available in the market, and the tiny harvest of 2021 will only exacerbate this.

The style of the reds depend rather more on when they were picked, but whether that was early or late, the wines have astonishing energy and power for such a hot vintage. The tannins are not as opulently ripe as 2018 or even 2019, but these fresher tannins are the defining character of the vintage, providing the counterpoint to the concentrated density.
