The development of the Second Wine is the same as for the Château d’Ausone.

Robert Parker 93/100

'One can’t say enough about the amazing job that Alain Vauthier and his daughter have done at this historic property on the decomposed limestone slopes of St.-Emilion. About half of their production goes into the second wine, Chapelle D’Ausone, which gives you an indication of the compulsive perfectionist attitude of the Vauthiers. The 2012 Chapelle D’Ausone has a dense ruby/purple color and is rich, broad and expansive, with notes of plum, blueberry and black raspberry fruit, powdered chalk and flowers. The wine is medium to full-bodied, beautifully pure and long and rich. This is better than many of the vintages of Ausone in the 1940s, 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s, which says a lot about what Vauthier has achieved.'

Wine Enthusiast 93/100

The second wine of Château Ausone is impressive in its own right. It reflects the fruitier, Merlot side of the vineyard, with ripe black fruits coming through the tannins. The wood aging does show in a vanilla character that will disappear as it matures. It's ripe, full of juicy fruit and ready to age over the medium term.'

First Grand Cru Classé A of Saint-Emilion, Château Ausone is one of the oldest property in the Bordeaux vineyards. Its history is that it occupies the site of the magnificent villa that the poet and proconsul Ausone owned in Lucaniac (Saint-Emilion). It is from here that his name comes from. This vineyard is for several centuries in the same family thus allowing to preserve very old vines. Today, the heirs of Madame Cécile Vauthier continue her work vintage after vintage.

Admirably exposed to the east and south, the terroir of Ausone Castle is surrounded by a belt of rocks, collapsed quarries which shelters it completely from the north and west winds. These centuries-old vines can produce 20 barrels of a wine that has long been at the head of the great wines of Saint-Emilion and the great wines of France.

The area of the estate represents 9 Ha. Also, the average age of the vineyard is 45 to 50 years old, however the richness of the soil constitutes the magnificence of the terroir: ¼ on a thin soil resting on starry limestones, ¾ on chalky clay-limestone coasts.
