At VINTAGE, we believe great wine and good stories go hand-in-hand and that’s certainly the case with La Source Gabriel. Located in a picturesque village in Provence, the Sumeire family has owned the Domaine Font-Freye estate since 1933 and acquired an adjacent estate Château la Tour de l’Evêque in 1958. Named in honor of owner Regine Sumeire’s grandfather, Gabriel, this wine is a tribute to him for ending a centuries long curse when he purchased Château la Tour de l’Evêque.
Picture an ancient fountain adorned by two stone dolphins that had been sadly dry for centuries. Legend has it the lady of the manor poisoned the well that supplied the estate’s water source with her tears when her husband left for the crusades. When Gabriel bought the estate, he linked it with the abundant spring at the neighboring Font-Freye, restoring the wellspring and revitalizing the ancient fountain.
A blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Cinsault, 10% Syrah, and 10% Rolle, the nose is all about fresh strawberry, delicate white peach and hints of citrus. On the palate it is silky and generous with creamy strawberry flavors continuing, followed by hints of spice. It’s a delicious and easy to like style that will pair well with pan-seared scallops, summer salads, fish tacos and grilled chicken.
